A rather average Blake Edwards comedy released the same year that another film that Cary Grant is destined to become a classic of all time? North by Northwest (1959). Operation Petticoat is written by Stanley Shapiro and Maurice Richlin.
The film is a long flashback of Admiral Sherman (Cary Grant), used to be the first captain of an old WW2 sub about to be put into service.
Cary Grant stars as Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman, commander the submarine USS Sea Tiger WW2 within their port in the Philippines.
December 1941. Before joining the battle in the Pacific, Sea Tiger was severely damaged by warplanes Japanese attack. Instead of disqualification of one year old ship immediately, Sherman, to obtain the authorization to fix sub in two weeks? which does not seem possible, given the inability to obtain parts or supplies.

But the next character that this will change the destiny of the Sub - Lt. Nicholas Holden (Tony Curtis) has previously served as humans? Idea? and the year? official entertainment? provide liaison Marina? with Hollywood?. He never set foot on a submarine and its appearance and gestures very spoiled boy who does not look like he is ready for the rigors of sailing to war.

After sailing in the open sea, an important plot point happens when five women officers of stranded on an island on the boat, thanks to Lt. Holden.
From then until the end, the story becomes a comedy of double meaning and innuendo, sexually suggestive of chance and socially embarrassing events and clashes between a boat full of attractive men and five women. A submarine is not for? For the co-education? And generates a lot of tension, a lot of one liners and laughs.

The film is full of sexist jokes and who would not fly today? When a girl is under 21 years, is protected by the law. When more than 65 years, is protected by nature. Anywhere else is fair game. Care.?
To the point, as they can get their hands only red and white paint finish complete with primer pink submarine, thus becoming the target of jokes in the Navy. But when? La Rosa Tokyo? Start making radio broadcasts to call for the submarine? pink? to hand over command of the Navy of SU, safe that Americans do not have a submarine pink, think about everything that could actually be a Japanese trick to pull a rose under the guise of an American ship behind the American lines. Thus, surface vessels of the United States were ordered to sink beneath the rose where it is.
For under the late Sherman Rose survives the attack and ridicule and the battle of the sexes tight quarters. It survives even on board of a goat and two babies carried by the official who also happens to be a nurse.
USS Sea Tiger returns to its homeport of an announcement later, the engine misfire and black smoke. The sub is fun to watch, mocked and ridiculed even proud of the craft displays colors and earns the respect of all these American sailors in the harbor of home.
The last scene - you zoom out so far. Lt. Holden is now the captain of the closed U.S. Sea Tiger and Sherman is an Admiral giving Holden Good news? will be the master of a new brand of nuclear installations.
They married and agents had children with the women he flirted in the subregion during the hectic days of WW2. Both are happy and the film leaves us there, when the weather is still good.
Cary Grant and Tony Curtis excel in their duties. They are superbly cast. Both are very credible and deliver their lines authority. Lots of good one liners and innuendo. But ultimately, it is an idea-good comedy that reflects the specific conditions of WW2. Half a century later, probably lost all its brilliance and relevance, especially for the younger generation born in the 80s and 90s.
